The Director of Communications is responsible for the development and implementation of the company’s internal and external communications strategies. In this role, the ideal candidate will set and guide the strategy for all public relations, advertising, social media, and website messaging to consistently position the corporate brand and reputation among key audiences. Internally, the candidate the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information for both leadership and team members, and cultivates the tools and tactics required to develop strong internal messaging and increase employee engagement across the company. He/she is charged with maintaining internal client relationships, developing budget recommendations, overseeing vendor selection and negotiations, spearheading new initiatives, and managing media relations.

 Responsibilities

  • Develop and nurture internal client relationships for key partners such as operations executives, sector and region leaders, and corporate resources senior leadership.
  • Develop and implement the internal communications strategy and approach; measure and monitor the quality, effectiveness, and ROI of internal communications tactics.
  • Curate content and messaging for internal communications, through channels and tools including (but not limited to) the intranet site.
  • Works closely with a senior peer group as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives, including Operations, HR, IT, and Corporate Business Development. As a team leader, he/she is responsible for recruiting, retaining and developing direct reports, namely the Communications Manager, whose role focuses on external campaign execution.
  • Develop internal communications training specific to marketing / communications team members, as well as for all employees through HITT Institute.
  • Develop annual external communications campaigns in support of the firm’s marketing plan and strategic vision.
  • Collaborate with marketing / branding team leaders to develop corporate messaging, and ensure implementation across all platforms.
  • Develop communications team tools such as content calendars and work flows to increase productivity and effectiveness of the communications team.
  • Ensure the content of the corporate website, social medial channels, and other collateral align and support the marketing strategy.
  • Collaborate with marketing / branding team members to develop the advertising strategy; perform audience analysis to ensure alignment and consistency of messaging throughout the organization and external outlets; provide oversight of metrics and analytics.
  • Manage media relations; guide the media buy strategy and execution with publications, and oversight of rankings.
  • Manage the crisis communications process and execution, working closely with risk management and executive leadership.
  • Act as national corporate liaison for overall PR efforts with the goal of developing high visibility leaders within the organization.
  • Develop strategic marketing content from technical experts and seek channels to communicate externally through publications, speaking engagements, roundtable discussions, webinars, etc.
  • Recruit and retain communications talent, developing new leadership through coaching and mentoring. Provide employee performance reviews for direct reports, and provide oversight for reviews of sub-reports.
  • Develop and execute initiative level projects, identifying innovative approaches and KPIs.
  • Lead the development of communications plans for emerging sector/regions; assist in implementation and measuring success.
  • Act as a brand ambassador for the firm, representing HITT in industry and professional organizations and events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Marketing, PR, or Business is required; Master’s degree is desirable
  • 10+ years of experience in increasing roles of responsibility in marketing, communications, or PR, or a combination thereof is required
  • Experience in B2B or professional services is required; experience in the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) field is a plus; agency experience is a plus
  • Managing dynamic teams in a corporate environment
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, SharePoint, CRM systems (especially Microsoft Dynamics), email automation, social content, and content management systems (Drupal / WordPress) is required
  • Budget development / management experience is desirable
  • Proven experience developing and executing corporate communications strategies and campaigns
  • Experience managing crisis communications, media relations, and advertising are required
  • Excellent writing, communication, and public speaking skills are required
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple projects with changing priorities
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage complex projects across a variety of functions
