The Center for Technology Innovation & Commercialization is responsible for accelerating the development and commercialization of the proprietary inventions of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and of Wake Forest University. This Center moves product ideas through the stages of technology evaluation, including pursuing patent protection, conducting market analytics and preclinical and clinical development, culminating in potentially licensing of the technology to industry, including startups. The Center handles all proprietary technologies including therapeutics, vaccines, diagnostics, medical devices and digital health, including apps.
The Director of Licensing reports to the Vice President of the Center and is responsible for the monetization through licensing with industry of a significant portion of the pipeline of current and future proprietary technologies developed at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and at Wake Forest University. Focus area: Therapeutics Commercialization
In this role the Director, Licensing will engage senior industry leaders in business development, licensing and product research & development for the purpose of marketing, selling and licensing our proprietary technologies. Industry sectors can include one or more of those in the life sciences (pharmaceuticals, vaccines, diagnostics), medical devices and advanced materials industries.
In this role, the Director, Licensing is responsible for negotiating product development, manufacturing and commercialization agreements, option agreements, materials transfer, confidentiality, and other agreements. The Director, Licensing will also facilitate, manage and be responsible for relationships with attorneys, other licensing personnel, industrial research sponsors, medical center and university administrators, and others as required.
The Director. Licensing will be have a high empathy for client relations and be service-oriented with strong communication and sales skills. He/she is expected to develop and maintain industry, venture capital, and business development contacts (including the use of databases) in order to identify potential licensees and business development partners and to establish sources of marketing information. He/she will also assist in promoting the Open Innovation industry engagement model of Wake Forest Innovations internally and externally, as well as nationally and internationally.

3. Works within teams in the Center for Technology Innovation & Commercialization to assess in a continuous manner the commercial utility, market value and patentability of inventions and other intellectual property of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and of Wake Forest University.
4. Both independently and with the Marketing & Communications department of Wake Forest Innovations works to market new technologies to industry to promote collaboration, acquire research funding and/or initiate licensing agreements.
5. Draft, review, and negotiate license, option, confidentiality, material transfer, and other agreements with industry working directly with internal and outside and others.
6. Where appropriate for a technology?s commercialization, be engaged in small business development including market analysis and preparation of business plans and structuring and negotiating equity and other financial arrangements.
7. Develop and nurture personal relationships with senior members of industry; develop databases of industry, business development and venture capital contacts.
8. Facilitate interactions with faculty, patent attorneys, consultants and industry. Manage outside patent counsel and manage accounting of the patent invoices and costs to assure compliance and payment. Supervise Center? personnel in Vice President?s absence as directed.
9. Provide post-execution monitoring of agreements, including management of internal distribution of revenues to inventors and departments.
10. Assist in the preparation of various technical and administrative reports, including those required for marketing and licensing, in compliance with government laws and regulations.
11. Educate internal personnel (faculty, staff and students) on technology development and commercialization (including licensing), intellectual property protection, technology evaluation, and institutional and government policies and regulations.
12. Provide pre-disclosure advice and consultation to institutional inventors. Solicit invention disclosures and faculty participation in the Open Innovation engagement with industry.
13. Prepare articles for internal and external publications to highlight and promote policies, activities, and accomplishments related the work of the Center for Technology Innovation & Commercialization.
14. Represent and promote the Center for Technology Innovation & Commercialization at internal and external events and meetings.
15. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein as requested by the Vice President.
