Eastman is seeking qualified candidates to fill the PhD Research Chemist position in the Process Chemisty Group in Kingsport, TN. The Research Chemist will be responsible for research and development in support Eastman’s Acetyls stream including the production of acetic anhydride via catalyzed carbonylation as well other downstream technologies.  The Process Chemistry group interfaces with Eastman’s Chemicals Manufacturing Division to identify and carry out chemical process improvement projects for existing manufacturing processes. The group also interfaces with Eastman’s Corporate Technology area to identify, scale-up, and commercialize breakthrough new process technologies and new products.

 

JOB EXPECTATIONS

•  Participate in the development team effort from inception to commercialization

•  Execute technical projects, including conducting laboratory experiments at the bench and directing the work of technicians

•  Communicate results through effective written documentation and oral presentations

•  Improve, trouble-shoot and debottleneck manufacturing processes

•  Lead and participate on multi-disciplinary teams

•  Work in a fast-paced, results-oriented team environment to assist in developing new technologies that provide solutions to customers' needs

•  Keep up with new technologies from the literature and identifying external research opportunities

 

Research Chemists are expected to take the lead in safety and housekeeping.  Additionally, Research Chemists need to be self-starters, work independently, and have good personal organization skills to be successful. Flexibility is a must in this distinctly innovative environment. Candidates should have a positive social attitude and like to work in a team.

 

REQUIREMENTS

•  Candidates must have Ph.D. in Chemistry or related discipline from an accredited college or university

•  Broad background in Organic or Inorganic synthesis and catalysis

•  Organometallic Chemistry is preferred with small molecule focus

•  Experience in organometallic catalyst development, especially related to carbonylation chemistry is highly desired

•  Motivated to develop into a company expert (leader) in catalysis

•  Chemical Manufacturing experience is a plus

•  Should be an innovative and creative problem solver with strong scientific convictions and willingness to take risks

•  Should be able to lead and engage other scientists and technicians to provide key analytical data for product and process development and to participate in multi-disciplinary product and process development teams

•  Clear and effective written and oral communication is essential

•  General computer experience with relevant and Microsoft software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

•  Demonstrated ability to identify and capture IP opportunities
