The Role

Tesla is currently seeking a highly motivated and accomplished Sr. Quality Engineer to support our solar products. The Sr. Quality Engineer is an integral part of the Manufacturing organization and will ensure that all products meet customer and company requirements. He/she is responsible for developing quality processes and methodologies, including quality/control plans and ensure products meet their specification. The Sr. Quality Engineer will work with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations to address and improve quality/reliability and manufacturability issues. Work will require participation in cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with manufacturing and other Tesla sites to establish processes and procedures that will ensure consistent high quality.
  • Drive the identification and resolution of manufacturing quality issues.
  • Establish and maintain product quality plans and control plans.
  • Implement statistical process controls (Cp, CpK, P Chart, Xbar, etc.) to ensure product compliance with Tesla standards.
  • Lead FMEA activities to ensure design and manufacturing issues are identified and risks mitigated.
  • Study product and production failures, understand root causes and work with Tesla’s internal teams or suppliers to address. 
  • Establish quality performance metrics and drive issues to root cause solutions.
  • Lead continuous improvement activities.
  • Provide feedback on Design-for-Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Reliability (DFR) to engineering and participate in reviews.
  • Provide input into critical dimensions or aspects on prints, Inspection check sheet preparation, measuring system plans, First Article Inspection (FAI) process instructions and completion, MSA, Pre-production plan, production ramp up plan and sample inspections.
  • Analyze and interpret data independently, make conclusions.
  • Present and publish quality results, data and reports.
  • Anticipate potential problems and take preventative action.
  • Lead ISO certification activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and/or the equivalent in experience; advanced technical degree preferred.
  • Evidence of exceptional ability.
  • 7+ years of quality engineering experience in a high volume manufacturing environment. 
  • Effectively communicate to all levels in the organization and translate complex ideas into a simple easy to understand format.
  • Able to work well under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines.
  • Detail oriented with strong record-keeping and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with ISO 9001, Lean Six Sigma, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Design of Experiments (DOE), FMEA, AQL inspection, and Zero defects philosophy.
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques (XPS, FTIR, AFM, SEM) is highly desired.
  • Understanding of reliability science is also desired, this includes knowledge with chamber aging protocols (thermal cycling, heat treatments, UV degradation), life-time prediction techniques (Arrhenius, Weibull, WLF, etc).
  • Ability to travel to local and overseas suppliers when necessary (20%+ travel may be required).
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment criminal screen. Additional pre-employment driving and drug screens may be required based on job responsibilities.
