Natural Resource and Environmental Economist


RTI International’s Center for Environmental, Technology, and Energy Economics has an opening for a senior position in the Research Triangle Park, NC office. The successful applicant will play a central role in the application of a variety of economic, statistical, and economic development analysis methods in support of projects in the domains of natural resource, environmental, and public policy.  Candidates with excellent skills in quantitative and qualitative analysis, policy evaluation, primary data collection, proposal and report writing, and project management are encouraged to apply.   Responsibilities 

  • Conduct economic, policy, and other analyses on a range of projects for public-sector, non-profit, and private-sector clients. Example topic areas include:
    • natural resource and environmental policy
    • energy policy
    • economy-wide models (input-output or computable general equilibrium models)
  • Lead primary data collection tasks, including conducting structured and unstructured interviews
  • Assist in the design, development, and implementation of data management and quantitative analysis using a variety of statistical, mathematical programming, and database software packages including Excel, Stata, and/or R.
  • Assist in the development of economic optimization models of markets and/or natural resource systems for policy analysis using GAMS
  • Clearly present research details and findings in written form through development of technical reports and manuscripts for publication in professional journals
  • Support and deliver high-quality components of projects within agreed timelines and budgets
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with clients, RTI team members, and partner organizations
  • Support the development of grant, cooperative agreement, and contract proposals
  • Contribute to business development through successful completion of project work in terms of quality, timeliness, cost/efficiency, and client satisfaction
  • Work independently or as a part of a project team




Qualifications 

  • PhD in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Natural Resource and Environmental Economics, Public Policy or related social science discipline or a Master’s degree and 3 years of experience
  • Experience using a variety of statistical, mathematical programming, and database software packages, including Excel, Stata, R, and/or GAMS  
  • Exemplary oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. If selected to interview for the position, writing samples will be required
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong academic record that demonstrates pursuit of challenging course work. If selected to interview for the position, academic transcripts will be required
  • Excellent analytical and time management skills
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.  

    Preferred 

  • Demonstrated background/interest in two or more of the following areas:
    • natural resource, environmental, and energy policy
    • forestry, agriculture, or land use modeling
    • climate change, including mitigation and adaptation measures
    • natural hazards risk
    • water resource economics and policy, including valuation techniques
    • economy-wide modeling.
  • Demonstrated ability to flex across and learn from multiple research disciplines in the delivery of creatively-focused products and services
  • Exposure to or direct experience with program evaluation and planning related to environmental and resource conservation programs.
