Job Summary

The Payroll Director is responsible for directing all aspects of U.S. and Canada payroll-related activities, and leading respective staff members. The leader will develop and control all tasks and strategies necessary to accomplish the organization's payroll processing objectives, including relationships with otherHR staff, payroll vendors, internal and external auditors and state and federal agencies. This role will also play a lead role in future acquisition integrations and expansion of payroll services that support our global payroll strategy.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Contribute to strategic initiatives by adding creative insights and developing recommendations and ensuring business value
  • Drive corporate payroll strategy, planning, communications, and marketing the payroll function and related services
  • Ensure the timely and accurate processing of payroll, including earnings and deductions
  • Review all payroll-processing controls to ensure employee deductions (including garnishments) are reconciled and paid according to federal and state laws
  • Ensure annual W2 statements and related tax filings are completed in a timely manner
  • Troubleshoot payroll issues both within and outside of the Payroll Department
  • Work with Shared Services, Plant Locations and other personnel to identify and develop strategies, services and activities to support current and future customer needs
  • Identify gaps in existing policies and procedures and implement improvements
  • Drive compliance with regard to internal audit guidelines, corporate policies, and procedures including IRS and SOX governance
  • Respond to payroll-related audit inquiries (internal and external)
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
  • Evaluate and maintain payroll systems with the support of internal and external IT providers
  • Provide leadership to a team of payroll professionals responsible for payroll processing, payroll accounting, and payrolltax
  • Coach, mentor and provide leadership development to your team to ensure operational excellence and team member engagement
  • Maintain payroll staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees
  • Design, set, lead strategies to continuously improve payroll operations
  • Assist with planning of the annual payrollbudget; own managing payroll spend vs plan
  • Maintain necessary vendor relationships and vendor contracts
  • Manage various projects related to payroll system and process changes, including system upgrades



Education and Experience Profile

  • Bachelordegree in Accounting, Finance, or Business is required. In lieu of degree, equivalent experience is required.
  • Minimum 10 years related payrollexperience including managing a payroll operations team in a large corporate environment with multi-state payrollexperience
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) is preferred


Required Skills

  • Experience with PayrollShared Service processes
  • Ceridian Dayforce experience a plus
  • Knowledgeable of Sarbanes-Oxley controls
  • Working experience of payrolltax at the federal, state and local levels
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent organization and planning skills
  • Excellent customer service, verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
