About Steelcase Manufacturing

Steelcase manufacturing plants represent a great Lean environment where we focus on manufacturing processes that blend the latest technologies along with traditional process technologies. You’ll experience assembly processes designed for optimal flow in a build to order model with highly configurable products. This is not your “text book” Lean environment and you’ll be challenged by our advanced application of Lean principles with these product types. We have a tremendous variety of process technologies, including high tonnage stamping presses, laser cutting of sheet metal and fabric, rollformers, brake presses, laser welding, robotic welding, precision aluminum machining, CNC routers, edgebanders, hot presses, panel saws, sophisticated powder coating and wood finishing technology along with custom designed upholstery and assembly applications. This collaboration is critical as we continue to innovate and explore the integration of advanced technologies, along with IoT information and data flow. Steelcase is currently seeking a Senior Manufacturing Engineer who will serve as a subject matter expert over manufacturing technology. The ideal candidate will understand theoretical approaches and practical implementations of these technologies in a manufacturing environment of various process types (e.g. assembly, material handling, metal processing, wood processing, upholstery, paint, etc.). You will be working with a team to develop innovative technological solutions for current and future applications at Steelcase.

Required Skills

Seek and explore opportunities and relevance of innovative technologies for Steelcase manufacturing locations globally
• Facilitate applications for grants, working with universities and consulting groups on research opportunities
• Work with manufacturing and operational leaders in the company to identify and pursue the biggest manufacturing challenges
• Work with technology providers (e.g. suppliers, machine builders, etc.) to further develop their products to meet Steelcase needs
• Lead the design, development, build, qualification and implementation of advanced manufacturing systems with optimal labor and material costs that improve quality, yield and throughput of our operations
• Drive reviews of equipment quotes, lead design reviews, manage and lead project teams to provide these technological solutions
• Document manufacturing technology development methods and work with maintenance teams to establish proper preventative maintenance tasks related to these technologies
• Lead and mange technical solutions to minimize costs while maintaining process reliability
• Work with tooling engineers in the development of tools for steel, wood, plastic and other materials
• Transfer knowledge on these topics to other engineering personnel
• Write engineering work instructions, ensuring specifications are well defined and documented for these technology applications
• Collaborate effectively with all areas of the organization (e.g. manufacturing, industrial design, engineering, marketing, management, customers)
• Communicate and coordinate activities with multiple functional groups
• Work with product development engineers to develop new process technologies that allow us to explore/launch new and innovative product design solutions
• Coordinate multiple projects
• Willingness to work independently and research globally
• Travel up to 25% of time

Required Experience

• BS/MS/PhD in Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline with appropriate coursework focus
• Must have at least 5 years of experience working with these technologies and 3 years of manufacturing shop floor experience
• Exposure to the study and application of advanced analytics, innovation simulation and IoT
• Must have strong project management/leadership skills
• Must have a background in lean manufacturing with experience in kaizen/continuous improvement activity
• Proficiency with MS Office required
• Working knowledge of SAP is a plus
• Knowledge of various manufacturing processes
• Passion for using critical thinking to implement change
• Ability to take theory, research and ideas to application, implementation and execution in a manufacturing environment
• Capable of managing multiple project assignments
• Team-oriented, flexible, must be able to work with all levels of management
• Functional experience working with engineering design project teams and machine builders/integrators
