  • Support the department’s efforts to ensure compliance with state insurance regulations.
    • Accurately and thoroughly interpret and verify state laws in team’s states.
    • Conduct, compile and interpret state research for use by department and underwriting teams.
    • Ensure that bulletins distributed by advisory bureaus (ISO, AAIS, etc.) and state departments of insurance are evaluated to determine impact to existing company processes.
    • As regulatory changes occur, determine impact on company practices and operations, including the compatibility of Markel products with bureau (ISO, AAIS, etc.) changes.
    • Guide the investigation and response process to consumer/insurance department complaints consulting with manager, legal department and appropriate underwriting division.
    • Lead the team’s efforts in the preparation and execution of internal and external initiated rate, rule and form compliance examinations.
  • Support the department’s efforts to obtain regulatory approval of its rates, rules and forms.
    • Strategize acceptable approaches to accomplish the rate, rule and form objectives of the company.  As needed, modify countrywide rate, rule and forms so that they are in compliance with state regulations.
    • Oversee the timely submission of rate, rule and form filings to state departments of insurance in accordance with state requirements within agreed upon time frames.
    • Oversee the timely responses to questions posed by the State Departments of Insurance that arise throughout the filing process.  When a conflict exists between the state’s and company’s objectives, find a resolution that minimizes the impact to the original underwriting intent.
    • Ensure regulatory approval of state rate, rule and form filings in a timely fashion.
  • Support the department’s efforts to communicate compliance concepts.
    • Ensure implementation notices are accurate and outline changes to existing underwriting processes, including changes to the company’s rates, rules and forms
    • Provide compliance requirements and coordinate implementations with Regulatory Business Analysts to ensure that policy issuance systems adhere to state regulations, including changes to the company’s rates, rules and forms.
    • Act as a liaison for compliance topics with underwriting teams.  Oversee responses to internal compliance inquiries that successfully communicate the department’s compliance requirements.
  • Supervise the Regulatory Operations team.
    • Provide all aspects of Human Resource Management (i.e. goal setting, performance reviews, associate development, etc.) for direct reports. 
    • Assist, mentor, coach and proactively share knowledge in area of expertise with other associates to build the base of organizational knowledge within PRS and Markel.
  • Participate in educational opportunities to enhance job related skills and knowledge.


  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
  • Preference given to individuals with applicable insurance designations

Work Experience /Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in insurance regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrate strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Use both written and verbal communication skills in a clear, effective and persuasive manner.
  • Plan and organize activities to maximize efficiency and productivity.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the insurance rate and form compliance process.
  • Knowledge of various property and casualty insurance coverages is preferred.
  • Must be able to supervise, coach and provide leadership to a team of associates.
  • Must be proficient in MS Office Products including Word and Excel.
