Position Summary

The Director of Payroll is responsible for designing, managing, planning, and coordinating ongoing administration of payroll functions. This role will take the lead as primary liaison between Payroll and HR subject matter experts, Accounting, HR functional business partners, and all other functional areas (as needed) to define, analyze and evaluate needs for services and (if appropriate) develop, implement and execute recommendations. This position will report to our Vice President of Total Rewards and HR Shared Services.  The Director of Payroll will be heavily involved in the implementation of Ceridian in the United States and Canada, and will manage the hiring, coaching, performance management and development of the Payroll team.



  • Drive key business results by leading complex projects and applying change management when and where needed
  • Involvement with special projects - e.g., new system implementation, etc.
  • Manage relationships with third party software vendors, and ensure company standards are followed in the maintenance of software
  • Effectively represent Payroll operations internally and externally in the marketplace
  • Consolidate and streamline North America Payroll Operations
  • Lead initiatives to identify, plan and implement key business improvements that incorporate necessary governance, processes, measurements, communication and reporting to sustain efforts as it relates to HR systems and processes, measurements, communication and reporting to sustain efforts as it relates to HR systems and processes
  • Partner with leadership and key stakeholders to ensure consistency of approach towards driving business objectives
  • Partner and collaborate with IT, HR, Finance, Legal, and other functional areas to leverage Payroll processes and/or systems in achieving organizational objectives and strategic alignment
  • Implement and maintain effective internal controls and proactively work to identify and implement efficiency improvements
  • Use thought leadership and data to promote this function and gain business partnership
  • Partner with Centers of Excellence leaders and business leaders to incorporate industry best practices and ensure holistic, integrated processes
  • Develop and implement best practices, key performance indicators and SLA metrics for department
  • Support all business initiatives which require infrastructure support from payroll (i.e, changes in attendance policies, etc.)
  • Provide leadership to ensure that payroll services are processed in accordance with established policies and procedures along with all legislative compliance requirements
  • Coach and mentor staff to ensure each team member excels individually and engages and motivates the team to work together towards the success of a common goal. Team focus aligned to customer service excellence and continuous operational improvements
  • Develop the payroll team, including hiring talent, providing professional growth and development opportunities, and creating an environment of service, knowledge, and accountability
  • Oversee workload and processing structure of department to maximize efficiency and prioritize in accordance with operational requirements/deadlines
  • Direct team to ensure compliance with all internal controls
  • Ensure payroll accuracy, efficiency and timeliness within a strong control environment
  • Support team through issue escalation
  • Ensure payroll issues escalated are resolved with root cause analysis and corrective action for all levels of employees and management



Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required; a Master's Degree is a plus
  • Certified Payroll Professionals (CPP) designation highly desired
  • Minimum of 10 years of management experience in Payroll environment required
  • Experience supporting Workday/Kronos/Ceridian systems is a plus
  • Position requires practical experience managing payroll-specific projects, implementing systems and defining business requirements
  • Experience with US and Canadian payroll (including Time and Attendance) required
  • Extensive knowledge of both US and Canadian payroll laws required
  • Experience with both union and non-union environments required

  • Proven strength as team leader, able to collaborate with and work across multiple locations, functions and disciplines
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills in order to express key points in a clear manner
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and manage multiple priorities
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively to various audiences, including field employees and C Suite leaders
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of Company policies/procedures
  • Willing and able to work out of our headquarters in Broomfield, Colorado; willing and able to travel to other locations up to 20% of time
