The Drugs, Violence, and Delinquency Prevention Program within the Center for Justice, Safety, and Resilience at RTI International has an opening for a substance abuse prevention Research Scientist to serve as a task and project lead for new and ongoing research studies that examine substance misuse and abuse of marijuana, alcohol, and prescription drugs including opioids. Areas of potential specialization include, program evaluation, implementation science, and prevention and intervention activities designed to ameliorate societal problems and increase community and individual health, safety, and resilience. In addition, specializations in emerging areas of interest to the Center, including international evaluation and research examining violence and victimization, are of interest. The position will be on RTI’s campus in Research Triangle Park, NC.

Research responsibilities

  • Expand research portfolio focused on substance abuse prevention with a focus on marijuana and prescription drugs
  • Assist with and win grant and contract proposals
  • Design research studies, analyze and interpret data
  • Develop and manage project/study budgets
  • Write technical reports for government and other clients
  • Write articles for submission to peer-reviewed journals
  • Present research results to government officials and other professional audiences

Project Administrative responsibilities

  • Fulfill all work-related obligations
  • Track and be responsible for project progress, deliverables, timelines, and budgets
  • Document time spent on multiple activities
  • Attend and participate in project/study and unit meetings

 

Qualifications

  • PhD in public health, community psychology, psychology, public policy, sociology, statistics, or a related behavioral health field
  • At least 3 years of experience conducting research and data analysis
  • Prevention Science orientation is desired
  • Knowledge of research, policy, and practitioner issues related to area(s) of specialization is required
  • Demonstrated experience writing successful proposals to fund research studies/projects in area(s) of specialization is preferred (required for more senior research scientist position)
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and to work both independently is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work successfully in multidisciplinary teams is required
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills are required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required; proficiency in Spanish is a plus
  • Track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals is required
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States
