What You’ll Do


As the Senior Commodity Tax Analyst you will be responsible for assisting with the company’s compliance with the various federal and provincial commodity tax rules. This role will interact with a variety of business functions that will provide an opportunity to understand the business and the interaction between business transactions and commodity taxes.



  • Prepare all provincial salestax returns and GST returns
  • Prepare all GST returns specific to a financial institution
  • Assist with the maintenance of an ITC model for a financial institution 
  • Understand and review federal and provincial tax rules and any changes to those rules, to assess the impact on transactions affecting specific business units 
  • Maintain reconciliations of commodity tax G/L accounts
  • Perform analytical review of the accounts and monthly transactions for reasonability, review of analytical reports, and inquire of relevant staff as necessary
  • Ensure the payments of taxes owing and preparation of monthly accounting entries are done on a timely basis
  • Assist with federal/provincial government commodity taxaudits including the gathering of information and drafting of responses to government audit queries
  • Understand the commodity tax self-assessment requirements and monitor the related processes within the finance department to confirm compliance
  • Assist with the determination oftaxable/exempt status of products sold to customers
    • Activities include researching and understanding various federal/provincial salestax point–of-sale exemptions, review of new product adds I changes on a daily basis, and following up with buying teams for additional product information/clarifications
  • Look for ways to improve business and internal processes by building efficiencies through automation or streamlining processes 
  • Communicate with various outside parties including, government officials, vendors, and business partners to resolve issues on a timely basis


  • 3+ years of experience working with commodity tax issues, preferably in the financial services sector
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Solid systems and technology background
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to work with a great deal of confidential information and maintain absolute discretion
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Accounting designation (CPA) is considered an asset• Working knowledge of PeopleSoft is considered an asset
  • Completion of In-depth GST/HST course is considered an asset 
  • Willing to travel between Oakville and Toronto offices as required
