Assistant Software Engineer

Basic Function

This position assists with the planning, design, development, release, and maintenance of custom web applications to support chemical and biological analysis programs.

Nature and Scope

This position reports administratively to a Section Manager or higher technical staff member. Work is performed independently and as part of a team to produce software solutions for both internal and external customers.

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with customers to understand their business needs
  • Design and develop complete software solutions using Agile methodology
  • Document software usage and develop training materials as needed
  • Maintain and support applications and databases
  • Administer development infrastructure tools and services
  • Collaborate with peers to develop innovative solutions for emerging opportunities

Success Factors

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including commenting software code
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with technical staff at all levels in a team-based environment
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and the ability to troubleshoot challenges
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by project needs
  • Ability to follow SOPs, document work per specifications, and work with limited supervision

Required Skills:

  • Experience with Web application development including writing, debugging, and reviewing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and C# or Java
  • Understanding of Restful WebAPI service development
  • Experience with various web development frameworks
  • Experience with Git version control systems
  • Understanding of relational databases and database design (MySQL, MS SQL, etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including commenting software code
  • Ability to obtain and maintain U.S. government security clearance

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Python software development
  • Experience installing Linux and performing patch management
  • Experience with network design, protocols, and administration
  • Experience with peer review of code
  • Understanding of Agile software development methodology
  • Experience with Breeze, MVVM pattern (use with Knockout, Angular, WPF), Entity Framework, Bootstrap, and Durandal
  • Existing secret security clearance

Minimum Qualifications

BS in computer science, data science or related field of study; AssociateDegree in a related field of study plus 3 years of relevant experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
