Position Summary: The Academic Advisor provides academic counseling and advising as well as learning specialist support to their assigned students as a first point of contact. Works with students to navigate academic challenges or remediation needs by providing support for expectations, understanding processes and policies, grade appeals, remediation requirements, and professionalism lapses. Provides support and connections to tutoring, personal counseling, and wellness services. The Academic Advisor provides an interface with Student Affairs for discussion about potential Leave of Absence (LOA) and acts as support to students returning from LOA. Manages and/or participates in planning, implementation and administration of medical school activities such as orientation, transition courses, student initiatives and programs. Essential Functions: Participates in early identification of students exhibiting signs of academic difficulty. Explores students individual learning preferences and works with them to develop active learning and study strategies that are appropriate for their needs and optimizes their learning. Providing academic support, including tools for time management, test-taking and study strategies, and Develops plans to assess the academic progress of students and assists them in developing individualized study and remediation plans, including timelines. Sets clear expectations for student performance and monitors the continued success of each student. Meeting with students with academic challenges (exam, course, or clerkship failures) and provide referrals to tutoring, personal counseling and/or mental health services, and career advising Assists with training and development of peer student tutors. Develops and delivers workshops and online modules to enhance active learning strategies in a diverse student population using evidence-based learning strategies. Assists the leadership team with the design and delivery of faculty development sessions, workshops, and consultations. Collaborates with the leadership team on comprehensive plans for teaching students effective study strategies for high stakes exams. (e.g., Step exams, Clerkship exams, and NBME exams). Qualifications: Masters or Doctoral degree in Education, Counseling, Educational Psychology, Psychology, Higher Education, or a related field. A minimum of 2 years of experience in academic and/or career counseling in a higher education setting is preferred. Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Educational Psychology, Psychology, Higher Education, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience in academic and/or career counseling in a higher education setting is required. Preferred Qualifications: Medical Education work experience at an allopathic or osteopathic medical school as a learning specialist Experience developing educational materials and/or teaching that connects basic science, clinical reasoning, and educational pedagogy and theory Experience with designing individual learning plans (ILPs) for diverse population of medical students Why Join Roseman University?
