Job Description

DescriptionAre you searching for challenging modeling and simulation problems to solve? Are you passionate about detailed mathematical representations of highly dynamical systems and intricate physics phenomenology? Are you looking to contribute and make a lasting impact on large-scale missile defense systems? Then we want you to join our team to help us evaluate and advance new technologies that protect our nation! The Weapon Systems Engineering group is seeking a technical professional to help us address complex engineering challenges for advanced missile defense systems. We are a multi-disciplinary team of experts whose conceive and assess real-world missile systems, perform laboratory / field testing, conduct in-depth data analysis, and present findings to sponsors and the warfighter. Our group promotes professional growth, a balanced life, and diversity of thought. As an Advanced Missile Systems Engineer:Your primary responsibility will be to understand and advance the efficacy of guided missile systems through the use of high-fidelity and mixed-fidelity simulations and statistical analysis tools that support the systems engineering product life cycle. You will evaluate the performance of a number of existing and future interceptor systems, closely examining and proposing new algorithms for EO/IR and RF seeker operations, guidance and control functions, fire control sensor handover processes, missile proximity fuzing, and warhead effectiveness. You will help to develop requirements and evaluation criteria for new interceptor designs to address emerging threats using a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach. You will develop and implement scenarios to test and evaluate designs against sponsor requirements. You will present key findings to various government sponsors including the U.S. Navy and the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), among others. You will make an impact on decisions and future designs for the systems that keep our warfighters safe! QualificationsYou meet our minimum qualifications for this job if you:Have a PhD in an Engineering field, Math or Physics.Have experience using scientific computing tools like MATLAB, Mathematica, or SciPy.Familiarity with digital simulation development and analysis, or a background in statistics or stochastic processes.Have exposure to systems engineering concepts, such as the design, development, simulation, or analysis of dynamical systems through classwork, internships, or thesis work. Are able to obtain an interim Secret security clearance by your start date and ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship. You'll go above and beyond the minimum requirements if you:Have demonstrated skills in modeling large-scale physical processes, using Monte Carlo simulation methods, or applying data science to detailed software representations of guided air vehicles, missiles, or related kinetic systems. Are comfortable working in a Linux OS environmentHave demonstrated strong public speaking and communication skills.Experience with MBSE, SysMI, Cameo or Rhapsody is a plus.Hold an active Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret level clearance. Why work at APL?The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) brings world-class expertise to our nation's most critical defense, security, space and science challenges.
