October supplied plenty of ammunition for all the people complaining about a delayed start to autumn, as well as those concerned about the warming climate. The month ranked as the third warmest October on record in Washington, 5.4 degrees warmer than normal. The beginning of the month felt much more like summer than fall. The coolest weather, compared to normal, came at the very end of the month when highs temperatures were close to 60 and lows dipped into the 40s. That last-minute cooling prevented October from becoming the warmest on record in Washington. (Photo by Katherine Frey/The Washington Post)

As ordered by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the spire of One World Trade Center is illuminated in red, white and blue following the deadly terrorist attack down a bike path not far from the building Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, in New York. At least eight people were killed and 11 were injured after a 29-year-old man used a rented flatbed truck to mow through cyclists and others on the popular bike route overlooking the Hudson River. According to a video from the scene, the attacker jumped out of the wrecked vehicle brandishing what appeared to be handguns. Some witnesses said he shouted Allahu akbar, meaning God is great in Arabic. Inside the rental truck, investigators found a handwritten note in which he had declared his allegiance to the Islamic State, according to officials. (Photo: AP Photo/Craig Ruttle)

""The Wave"" is a sandstone rock formation in northern Arizona that was formed by a combination of water and wind erosion over time. Located at the Coyotes Buttes North wilderness area near Page, Arizona, it''s highlighted by it''s unique U-shaped troughs. Due to its fragile nature, access is limited to only 20 hikers per day.
