I provide technical guidance to the U.S. Government and NGOs on health programming to respond to health situations , said Sonia Walia, Health Advisor for USAIDs Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) team in Haiti. Sonia has worked for USAIDs Office for Disaster Assistance since 2011, helping advise host governments and NGO partners about public health risks that arise during and after disasters. The native of Augusta, Ga., served on the Hurricane Matthew DART as its health advisor, with a primary focus on mitigating the spread of cholera. Knowing that what we are doing is immediately providing emergency health care to those that need it the most, motivates Sonias dedication as a aid worker. ... The poor state of several apartment buildings in Bosnia and Herzegovina left residents uncomfortable and cold. They grew accustomed to shabby-looking homes with leaky roofs and inadequate insulation. With the support of USAID, Habitat for Humanity brought together people from the community and the public and private sectors to provide better homes. Thousands leave Moldova each year seeking employment elsewhere to better support themselves and their families. USAIDs Moldova Competitiveness Project supports the countrys efforts to promote a strong, diverse and export-oriented economy. It focuses on the tourism, textile and ICT sectors to increase incomes, alleviate poverty and reduce emigration.
