The World Food Programme and local authorities carried out the first distribution of High Energy Biscuits on the island of #StMaarten, on the Eastern #Caribbean, among 1,200 people who were affected by #HurricaneIrma last week. High energy biscuits are light, nutritious and easy to transport. WFP and partners often distribute them in the early days of an #emergency, such as the this one caused by #Irma. Other commodities were provided by other #humanitarian operators on the ground. WFP/Marc-Andr Prost

Violence in #Myanmars northern Rakhine State has been brewing for years, and the most recent outbreak has resulted in an influx of #Rohingya refugees to Coxs Bazar across the border in Bangladesh. In response, the World Food Programme has scaled up its food assistance to refugees here. The agency hopes to restart food distributions to those displaced in central Rakhine State in the coming days, but it is unfortunately unable to do so in northern #Rakhine. WFP/Saikat Mojumder

#HopeLooksLike: #HurricaneIrma, a category 5 hurricane, is one of the strongest hurricanes ever seen in the Atlantic. The change of the hurricane trajectory towards the north decreased its potential impact on #Haiti and prevented a major catastrophe. However heavy rains caused #flooding, particularly affecting the Northern departments. WFP Office is still assessing the damages. In anticipation of Irma, 70 tons of High-Energy Biscuits were delivered from #Dubai, enough to assist immediately 80,000 people for 4 days. National authorities are leading the #humanitarian response to Hurricane Irma, and the World Food Programme remains mobilized to support national and local authorities in the response and the evaluation of damages.
