Congress gave TVA the okay to build Boone Dam in August of 1950, and work began at the site almost immediately. The new dam was completed and its gates closed December 6, 1952 an achievement credited to TVAs ability to transfer equipment and workers with years of experience in dam construction from other projects. #TBT #BuiltForThePeople

This summer the South Holston Dam powerhouse will undergo a major upgrade as part of our Hydro Major Maintenance program. The old Francis turbine and all major mechanical components will be pulled out of the Unit and replaced with new equipment including the generator and all electrical components. Here is the brand new 45,000 pound Francis turbine being fabricated. In the weeks and months ahead we''ll post updates on the project. In preparation for this major project, the public road directly in front of the powerhouse, South Holston Dam Road, will close to traffic on Monday, March 13. Access to the top of South Holston Dam and the overlook will remain open.
