This spring, for the first time in many years, the gates of the old Rose Garden at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate were re-opened to the public. While the site is no longer conducive to growing roses, we have begun replanting the space with a selection of annuals and perennials that add to the beauty and enhance the romantic ruins. And the Formal Garden is now in its second full year of planting and growing. So if you find yourself in Ipswich, it''s definitely worth a visit! This week we continue our Trustees TBT Tour to lesser known properties Gov. Hutchinsons Field in Milton. Images clockwise from left: Beyond the field view, the Neponset marshesfilled with haymakers in July during the Governors time and Boston Harbor with its forts, busy wharves, and sea-going vessels. This one is significant as it is one of the only examples existing in New England. Popular in the late 18th and early 19th century formal garden, the Ha-Ha was designed to keep out wondering cows or sheep while not interrupting the view of the garden or in this case, Boston. The Governor was both an accomplished historian as well as gardener. Governor Thomas Hutchinson b. 1711 d. 1780. Massachusetts Governor: 17711774. He would never again see his summer cottage as Hutchinson described it, with a spectacular view over a league or two of meadow. Built under the direction of Sir Francis Bernard, today the house no longer remains. Courtesy Boston Public Library. #thetrustees #historicnewengland #history #visitma #massachusetts #milton

Hosting an abundance of showy perennials and blooming annuals, the Northampton Community Garden in Roxbury is a fantastic visit during the early summer months. The gardeners here include architectural elements, sculpture, decorative containers, and hardscaping in their plots to create a fanciful mosaic. At the center, a blue gazebo provides shelter and gathering space to tie everything together. The group fires up the grills to host regular social evenings in July and August; all are welcome to attend and enjoy the garden.Jeremy Dick is the Stewardship Manager of the Boston Gardens, and he sent us these wonderful images from the garden this week. Summer is in full swing, which also means we''re now in peak season for shorebird chicks. Did you know that piping plovers are protected by law? It is illegal to touch or disturb them for any reason. So remember, when you see our feathered friends at the beach, please make sure to enjoy them from a distance only!
