Willis Tower marked a pivotal achievement in high-rise design, and a major step toward exemplifying SOM''s belief that the structure of a building should inform its exterior profile. Completed in 1973, and formerly known as the Sears Tower, the 110-story building is composed of nine squared tubes, each without internal supports yet rigid within itself. The tubes are bundled together as a closed square above the first 50 stories and terminate at varying heights, creating a multi-tiered landmark in the Chicago cityscape. Clad in a pleated glass curtain wall that recalls the structure and lightness expressed in Chinese paper arts, the Tianjin Global Financial Center acts as a modern gateway for the historic port city of Tianjin. The structural framework of the skyscraper, built entirely from thin steel plates, is uniquely slender for a region with high winds. Atop the tower, an observation deck and sky restaurant provide public access to a 360-degree view of the city. Airport design is both an art and a science: the best terminals are not only functional, but also beautiful and awe-inspiring spaces. Millions of people pass through these terminals every day, yet few understand their inner workings as well as SOMs Roger Duffy and Derek A.R. Moore. The two designers have conceptualized some of the most ambitious aviation projects around the world, including Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airports Terminal 2 in Mumbai, captured here by @aroficial. In a new interview on @Medium, Moore and Duffy reflect on their own travel experiences, and share their ideas on how to make airports work better for everyone. In the 1950s, SOM created a master plan for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. The Cadet Chapel, represented here as a sectional model, was the culminating architectural element of the plan. Defined by its striking geometry, the Chapel features a succession of 17 glass and aluminum spires, three of which are included in the model. Within, two levels hold Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish chapels and an all-faiths room. The result is a unified religious building that serves as an inspiring place of worship for multiple faiths, and an enduring landmark for the U.S. Air Force Academy. #Architecture #Design #Chapel #ColoradoSprings #ArchModelMonday
