#throwbackthursday to Thomas Middleditch''s flyover of a coal ash pit. Take action to protect the Clean Water Rule at sc.org/cleanwaterrule #TBT #Repost @tombini Last week @sierraclub and @altamaha_riverkeeper showed me what life after a coal plant is shut down looks like. We went to Sinclair Lake in Georgia to see three separate cesspools which sit behind the retired Plant Harllee Branch coal plant filled with coal ash and more chemicals than I can remember (I did remember arsenic and mercury though). They constantly leak into the lake through secret and illegal overflows. The plan to ""clean"" the cesspools currently falls short of what''s required to keep the residents and wildlife safe. Cancer rates among other afflictions are high in the area. Efforts are ongoing to clean things the right way but pushback is constant from Georgia Power (go figure). We have to move on from coal and other fossil fuels. Let''s spend all the money trying to revitalize a dying industry on retraining all the fine working folks that made the coal companies rich into a sector that has actual growth. Let''s be honest about the short and long term effects of coal and stop lying to small towns across this country. Many more plants just like this are still up and running. The Donald follows me, right? Donny, baby, stop being a prick. What about you, Scott Pruitt? Scotty, sweetie, maybe take a break from assaulting every aspect of the environment? Thanks. See you at home. Luv u. #beyondcoal #coal #coalash

See a map of toxic sites in the vicinity of Hurricane Harvey: sc.org/harveytoxicsites Please tag your friends to get this to folks on the ground that need this information. For decades, Houston has been home to an immense concentration of chemical and plastics plants, oil and gas refineries, Superfund sites, fossil fuel plants, and wastewater discharge treatment plants among others, threatening the surrounding communities. The overwhelming majority of these facilities were constructed in communities of color, only adding to the burden felt from this disaster. Now, in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, the threat posed by these facilities has been magnified. The map we''ve put together details some of the major plants, refineries, and facilities that are posing heightened threats to the 25 counties most affected by Harvey. It will be updated as we learn of actual reported and confirmed instances of releases, spills or accidents. Go to sc.org/harveytoxicsites to see the map. And tag your friends to spread the word. #harvey #harvey2017 #hurricaneharvey #hurricaneharvey2017 #hurricanharvey #hurricane #toxic #toxicsites #danger #oil #gas #chemicals

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone across Texas and the Gulf Coast facing the landfall of Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. The storm has already brought historic rain and flooding, and is expected to continue through the week. Already some have lost loved ones and many will have to rebuild their homes; all are dealing with their sense of home being ripped away. Unfortunately, the damage and heartbreak continues to be felt but it will not break the bonds of our community. First responders, emergency service staff, and everyday people are helping residents to safety, providing warm meals, and working to establish a sense of peace in the wake of this disaster. We hold these heroes in our thoughts as well. @huffposts @leemoran & @godzilary19 put together some suggestions on how to help those those facing the effects of Hurricane Harvey now and for the days and weeks to come.
