Were always proud when staff step up during a time of need. Meet Alisa Roberts, D.O., an emergency physician who traveled to assist patients in response to #HurricaneHarvey and #HurricaneMaria. Over the last few weeks, she deployed as a member of Ohio-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) part of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS). She deployed to provide medical care to those communities devastated by Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas and Hurricane Maria in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Dr. Roberts and her teammates as a group assisted more than 1000 patients in their time deployed. In Houston, she worked at the NRG center in support of a federal medical shelter and a mass shelter doing medical care for those housed in these facilities. They treated conditions ranging from diabetes to respiratory distress. In response to Hurricane Maria, Dr. Roberts and her teammates completed a few different missions, including assisting with Emergency Department efforts in Ponce, Puerto Rico. There, patients were seen for conditions seen in emergency departments on a daily basis such as heart attacks and respiratory conditions but also with disaster related diseases such as trauma, nausea, vomiting, dehydration and wounds. Other team members treated patients within a tent while others went into mountain communities in the areas surrounding Ponce to bring medical treatment to those who could not get to the hospital. She also spent time doing assessments of hospitals and their needs, and the support that needed to be provided to other hospitals in the region. Dr. Roberts is an emergency physician with Emergency Physicians Northwest Ohio. EPNO is the physician group that staffs emergency departments at ProMedicas Toledo, Toledo Childrens, Flower, Fostoria, Bay Park and Lima Memorial Hospitals. Through the support of her physician colleagues, she is able to fulfill her commitment to DMAT and serve and support those in greatest need after a disaster. #promedicaproud
