Mental Health Therapy Aides (MHTA) require no college degree, and training is available. But to qualify, you must successfully complete the MHTA Trainee Civil Service exam. On this final day of #BlackHistoryMonth, the Office of Mental Health recognizes #mentalhealth pioneer Dr. Phyllis Harrison-Ross. Dr. Harrison-Ross was an psychiatrist who pioneered programs for children with mental illness and developmental disabilities. Her programs were implemented in public schools and reduced the institutionalization of children. She also studied the effects of poverty on children and treated children for phobias. She served as president of the Black Psychiatrists of America from 1976-1978 and became the chair of the Medical Review Board of the New York State Commission of Corrections in 2008. Dr. Phyllis Ross died in January 2017 of lung cancer.

As #BlackHistoryMonth winds down we recognize #mentalhealth pioneer Dr. Linda James Myers. Dr. Myers is internationally known for her work in the development of a theory of Optimal Psychology. Dr. Myers Oneness model of human functioning offers insights from the wisdom tradition of African deep thought, and converges with modern physics and Eastern philosophies.
