"Thomas is now a healthy, thriving 16-month-old who loves to climb, eat cookies, 'help' with laundry, play with our dog and explore any place he can fit. The NICU road is long, but there is always an end." Amber delivered her son, Thomas, at 31 weeks and 1 day, after which he spent 27 days in the NICU. She volunteers with the OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital NICU Advisory Council to help make the stays of NICU families a bit less stressful. This Sunday, she'll join other graduate families to serve Thanksgiving pies to NICU families in our Gwynn Brice Dockery Family Lounge. #WorldPrematurityDay

"My [pancreatic cancer] patients have taught me so much. They've taught me how to be brave in the face of adversity. They have taught me how to love. They've taught me how to care for others... They really taught me in many ways how to live my life." - Dr. Brett Sheppard November 16 is World Pancreatic Cancer Day. We're illuminating Portland's Morrison Bridge in purple today in honor of all those touched by pancreatic cancer and to raise awareness of this disease. #WPCD

The Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery is committed to providing the best trauma care to both civilian and military patients. Six of the 12 surgeons in our practice have served in the military and deployed overseas. Were also involved in several outreach activities, including teaching Advanced Trauma Life Support, Stop the Bleed, Rural Trauma Team Development and Fundamentals of Critical Care Support courses throughout the state of Oregon. Dr. Phil Van is one of many veterans working hard to heal and inform our community at OHSU and beyond. He was commissioned into the US Army Reserve in 2010 and has since deployed twice to Afghanistan to provide forward surgical support to U.S. and Afghan forces (hes pictured here returning from his second deployment in 2016). He also cares for patients in the VA Portland Health Care System's Surgical ICU. Thank you for your service!
