Q: Why does a natural gas leak smell like rotten eggs? A: Natural gas itself is odorless, colorless and tasteless, but we add an odorant to give the gas a rotten egg-like smell for safety reasons so the human nose can easily detect it. Other signs of a natural gas leak may include: Blowing or hissing sound Dead or discolored vegetation in an otherwise green area Dirt or dust blowing from a hole in the ground Bubbling in wet or flooded areas Flames, if a leak has ignited If you suspect a natural gas leak in your area, leave the area immediately (without using anything that could ignite the natural gas) then call us toll-free at 800-477-5050 and 9-1-1. There is no charge for investigation of gas leaks.
