Were wrapping up our #WhyYoga project with a photo of our colleague Dr. Lanay Mudd, who is a program director in our Division of Extramural Research. She gave a talk last week at the National Institutes of Health on the science of yoga. One stat from her talk that stood out to us? 94% of Americans who practice yoga say that they do it for wellness reasons. And they say it makes them healthier in many ways. In fact, did you know that one of our Centers focus areas in yoga research is to understand whether and how yoga may impact high-priority outcomes, such as pain management, anxiety/depression, and health promotion? We hope you continue to follow along as we share information on integrative health approaches and we are so grateful to everyone who participated in this project to share their #WhyYoga story. . . . . . #yoga #WhyYoga #yoga #yogainspiration #igyoga #yogajourney #yogagram #yogaasana #yogalife #NationalYogaMonth #mindandbodybalance #wellness #wellbeing #anxiety #healthpromotion #scienceofyoga

Were winding down this week with our last few #WhyYoga regrams. This #wordgram comes from @thewinifredjones, who shared with us the connections she found between her yoga practice, her family, and her community. WhyYoga? she asks. To give back (with humility, grace, equanimity, and compassion). Theres only a few days left, but we still would to hear the stories of what brings you to your yoga mat, and what you take away from the experience. Just use #WhyYoga in the caption and tag @nih_nccih in the post. Another big thank you to our friends at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) who have sent us another submission to our #WhyYoga photo project. They dont have an Instagram account, but it hasnt stopped them from sharing their stories. Stephanie Dailey, Director of NIAs Go4Life program wrote: Yoga is the first thing I do in the mornings, and it helps me start the day in a calm, yet invigorated way. Over the years, I believe it has helped me stay limber and flexible, while enhancing my muscle strength. I truly enjoy it! And we truly enjoy all the stories youve shared with us this month. Please keep them comingyou have a few more days! Use #WhyYoga in your caption and tag us (@nih_nccih) in your post. Todays #WhyYoga photo project regram comes from @themindfulrebels. Why do I practice yoga? It''s a practice that I can do anywhere, at any time, for a lifetime. We go on vacation together. We wake up together. We go to work together. I rely on my yoga practice to help me manage all circumstances in life, like using my breath to relieve my anxiety. Or using postures like this one, #ardhachandrasana or #halfmoonpose, to help me focus my naturally overactive mind. Why do you practice yoga? Tell us! Just use #WhyYoga in the caption of your post and tag us (@nih_nccih).
