The vampire squid doesnt vant to suck your blood. Its actually on the prowl for marine snowmucus and other organic particles that drift down into the deep sea. Mmm tasty. Amazing by our colleagues at @mbari_news Halloween may bring to mind mythical beings like vampires. Vampyroteuthis infernalis, means vampire squid from hell. This name may be fun, but it''s also misleading. This creature is not a vampire it survives mostly on a mixture of poop and snot but it is also not a squid! Vampyroteuthis is a living fossil with its own phylogenetic order (Vampyromorpha) that is slightly more closely related to octopods than squids. Octopods evolved at least 300 million years ago and the earliest vampyromorph is thought to have appeared at about the same time. Due to the lack of fossils, our understanding of early coleoid (i.e. squid, octopus, cuttlefish and belemnoid) evolution is rather poor. But what is clear, is that this amazing little deep-sea critter still captures the imaginations of marine biologists and non-scientists alike!
