#fbf to the Great Depression and the famed photographic unit of the Farm Security Administration. The programs director Roy Stryker was known to be a tyrannical editor, and had a habit of punching holes in negatives he didnt like, killing them and leaving a gaping black void in the photos. The rejected photos take on a new, haunting aspect, with a menacing black orb obscuring faces and hovering over landscapes. Thousands of killed photos now reside in the Library of Congress alongside the iconic works of the FSA photographers. For more information, check out the link in our bio. #retronaut

#tbt to the turn of the 20th century and the Norwegian studio of photographers Marie Heg and Bolette Berg. When not occupied with the business of photography, Heg was an outspoken suffragist, and used the photo studio as a meeting place for women activists. Decades after Hegs death, a box of negatives marked private was discovered. Inside were extraordinary photos of the partners'' private gender-bending experiments. Short-haired Heg poses in mens outfits in intimate, playful and serious tableaux, occupying traditionally male roles while campaigning for womens equality.
