Meet Jenny. She joined Harkins in 2016 as a project engineer after interning with us in the summers of 2014 and 2015. Jenny graduated from University of Maryland, Eastern Shore with a degree in Engineering. She is currently working at the Greenwood Village project in Cambridge, MD. Question: Why did you choose construction as a career? Answer: I didn't know I had an interest in construction management until I interned with Harkins in the summer of 2014. I interned at the Rivers Edge project and really enjoyed my experience. Q: What is it like to be a woman in the construction industry? A: I thought I would have a harder time fitting in, but that hasn't been the case at all. Everyone has been very welcoming, especially the site teams I have worked with. Q: What do you love most about your job? A: I love that my job offers the ability to be outside. I especially like all the people I come into contact with and the difference that I am able to make in the communities around me. Q: What is your favorite tool? A: Although I don't use them in my everyday job, I really like heavy equipment like backhoes, excavators, and skid steers to name a few. I think it's fun to see how they are operated and used for different things on a project. Q: What are your career goals? A: I'd like to become a project manager at Harkins. I would also like to go back to school for an MBA with a focus in project management.

Meet Jawanda. She joined Harkins in 2017 as a project engineer and is working in our Northeast Region. Jawanda is a graduate of Michigan State University, where she earned a master's in Construction Management as well as a graduate of Indiana University, where she earned a bachelor's in Regional Planning/GIS and Land Use Policy. Question: Why did you choose construction as a career? Answer: I have always loved buildings. One day, I just realized that seeing a building go from concept to completion was what I was most excited about. Q: What is it like to be a woman in the construction industry? A: I think it's fun - you don't have to do anything extra to stand out! Q: What do you love most about your job? A: I love being on a jobsite and seeing the continual progress of the project. Q: What is your favorite tool? A: Post-It Notes! I like using all the different colors to organize tasks for each trade. Q: What are your career goals? A: My career goals tend to change and evolve. What I believe will not change is my desire to see my femininity as a strength and not as something that is out of place.
