Calling all hands-on deck! Or, for the community of Coyol de Linaca in Honduras, all hands-on spigot! On August 4, 2017, the Honduras Water team proudly inaugurated their second water system in 2017. Pictured above, the children from Coyol de Linaca join their community in celebrating the 8.9 kilometer of tube and 114 houses connected to clean, chlorinated water. . Why clean water? From January to July of 2017 alone, Global Medical Brigades in Honduras saw 3,976 patients for parasites or diarrheal reasons! By helping communities like Coyol de Linaca construct their own water systems (with the help of our students and #RotaryInternational), GB cuts down on the number of patients at severe risk for water-borne diseases. . . . . . #GlobalBrigades #GB365 #Water #WaterBrigades #GlobalWaterBrigades #Honduras #CleanWater #WaterIsLife #AguaEsVida #PorLosNios #NonProfit #Sustainability #Empowerment #SustainableDevelopment #SDGs #SustainableDevelopmentGoals

Meet Santa Magdalena Avila, today''s #WCW and financial chair for the Water Committee of La Campos in Honduras. Santa explains the role she hopes to see the next generation make in the health of the community, ""Kids should treasure what is being done related to the water project, so when it is done they can take care of it, don''t waste or dirty the water so we can use the water to be clean and healthy."" . According to the United Nations, 1.8 billion people in the world still use a source of drinking water that is contaminated. Instead of being well hydrated and nourished, many water sources in rural Honduras leave community members with parasites, diarrheal illness, and an array of rashes and skin issues due to increased growth of fungi and bacteria found in their local water supply. . GB Honduras'' 2017 Womens Leadership Conference seeks to help empower women like Santa to create healthy lifestyles within their communities and to teach the importance of healthy life styles to future generation. Global Brigades staff will offer training in how to lead a healthy lifestyle including topics such as hygiene, proper hydration, and how to deal with toxic household products. . Though women such as Santa Magdalena Avila have seen many obstacles face their community in the past, with good training and proper resources, they are well on their way to making a clean and healthy future. . . . . . #GlobalBrigades #GB365 #MyGBStory #FacesOfGB #WomensEmpowerment #Empowerment #Sustainability #SustainableDevelopment #SDGs #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #WomenLeadership

Earlier this month, GB Panama wrapped up its 2017 Global Human Rights Brigades season, in which 132 volunteers representing 13 universities provided 133 pro-bono legal consultations alongside Panamanian lawyers. . In addition to these legal clinics, volunteers facilitated educational charlas to address bullying and domestic violence. . Gurpreet Ballagun from the University of Birmingham''s Human Rights Chapter reflected on her experience volunteering in the community of Yaviza, ""To see first hand where our donations are put was not only a rewarding experience but an eye-opener as to the lack of resources in Darien, and the fundamental barriers as such to the access of justice and legal advice. It has definitely made me more aware, and appreciative of what I have living in the UK. Our trip to the Caja Rural also enabled me to see the impact GBHR are making in the community through helping the bank and committing to doubling their savings over the next five years. To work with such a meaningful cause and meet so many great people was a real privilege."" . . . . . #GlobalBrigades #GB365 #HumanRights #HumanRightsBrigades #Panama #Sustainability #SustainableDevelopment #GBPanama #Volunteer #VolunteerAbroad #CollegeLife
