Investment Intern Spotlight: Elisha Reyes, University of California Davis # Studying: Economics. ""I''m the first in my family to go to college."" # Why intern with CalSTRS? He learned about the program through the Economics Honor Society. ""I thought this internship was so cool. I feel really lucky to get into institutional investing."" # Plans for the future? ""I see myself working in institutional investments."" Maybe at CalSTRS. ""If the opportunities I''m facing don''t become viable, I may move to Europe and spend time working there."" # What do you think of CalSTRS so far? It''s a lot more practical experience than he expected as an intern. ""I thought I would be doing a bunch of clerical work. All the asset classes welcome us and give us useful information. I''m getting actual exposure to different asset classes at a granular level. It''s awesome. It''s educational, which is a value add for interns."" # Why study economics? I studied economics because I was given an opportunity to work at an investment advisory startup which gave me my first exposure to the interesting and complex area of investments. # What''s one thing people don''t know about you? ""I like to travel. If I had to choose a favorite place, it would be a tie between Prague and Paris.

Investment Intern Spotlight: Yan-Ling Lu, Georgetown University # Studying: Finance and accounting, with an expected minor in economics and possibly computer science # Why intern with CalSTRS? CalSTRS is a partner with @girlswhoinvest, which encourages young women to go into investments. The program is four weeks at Wharton School studying finance and a six-week internship with an asset manager. She''s from San Jose, so she was placed here. # Plans for the future? ""I would like to work at a bank or on Wall Street or as a financial auditor."" Her long-term plan is to be a CFO in 30 years. ""But I''m 20 years old. As I move closer, we''ll see what happens."" # What do you think of CalSTRS so far? ""Everyone here is generous with their time. They''re very kind and willing to help. I''m realizing the back end work of markets is interesting."" # What''s one thing people don''t know about you? ""I like art. I''ve been drawing since I was five. During high school, I submitted an oil painting at the State Fair, and someone offered to buy it.
