As an infant, Richard Wiltse (E64) was diagnosed with severe hearing loss. Growing up with a disability was challenging, but I quickly found ways to overcome the roadblocks standing in my way, Wiltse said. I was and still am determined not to let my disability define me as a person. Today, Richard, a designer in the In-Service Aircraft Carrier Program at NNS, says that he is still overcoming challenges related to his disability. Ive been working at the shipyard for 21 years and I love my job, he said. Because hearing is a key sense, Im often reminded of my disability, but I concentrate on the task at hand and dont think about what I cant do, but rather what I can. As we celebrate Disability Awareness month throughout October, take time to recognize the great achievements, contributions and innovations of disabled Americans.
