The American Bar Association has been providing legal assistance for disaster survivors since 1978. In the last 10 years, the ABA has responded to 157 declared disasters in 43 states and 2 U.S. territories. Disasters, both natural and manmade, can result in large populations in immediate need of legal assistance. As lawyers, we stand for aiding disaster relief efforts. With the assistance of organizations such as the Legal Service Corporation and Texas Legal Services, the ABA is developing training and identifying volunteer opportunities for lawyers who want to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
