Tonight was a very special night for Elston Harris. He got to unfurl the #BearDown flag with the Chicago Police officer and #AdvocateHealth cardiologist who saved his life. After retiring as a Chicago Public School teacher, Harris coordinated and championed a basketball mentoring program on Chicagos South Side. This program, known as the Weekend Warriors, is one of the citys hidden gems, which unites men and boys of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. It''s become so successful that it regularly attracts support from NBA legends and current players, Hollywood celebrities, and local personalities. However, the driving force behind Weekend Warriors nearly came to a halt when Harris suffered a heart attack at the end of the final game of the day, right on the court. Fortunately, Chicago Police Officer Binyamin Jones was also on the court and prepared to save the day. Jones administered chest compressions continuously for approximately 10 minutes until an EMS team arrived and transported Harris to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where he received heart stent surgery and landed under the care of Advocate Trinity Cardiologist Dr. Marlon Everett. Today, Harris, Jones and Dr. Everett maintain a special bond, as seen in these photos. Swipe to see more pics from their exciting night!

Meet Alisha She is a Senior Research Nurse Coordinator in the Creticos Cancer Center at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Alisha has been with Advocate for almost two years, however, she did work here shortly after nursing school in our Progressive Coronary Care Unit. Shes glad to be back, especially in this position, because she has always enjoyed learning. I love having the opportunity to learn while progressing patient care. The Advocate community is so supportive and so diverse, it makes conducting research here so much more rewarding. Alisha says her job is truly collaborative, not just with her team, but with the patients. Clinical trials are voluntary for patients. But, if it werent for their participation, the medical community wouldnt have made so many breakthroughs in care. We are filled with gratitude for those who do choose to participate. Alisha is just one small part of a campaign we are sharing on our social media accounts every week. #IAmAdvocate its the nurses by our patients bedside, the physicians, the volunteers at the front desk, the engineers in the basement, the pharmacists, the techs, the housekeepers, the cooks and everyone in-between. Stay tuned for more photos and stories from our associates, nurses, physicians and clinicians across our health care system.
