Your phone addiction is costing you decades of your life

Your screen-addiction is costing you nearly half of your life.

While it may sound alarming to hear about parents hiring coaches to get their children disconnected from their smartphones, it isn’t a stretch considering how much time we spend using our phones and other electronic devices.

Residents in Arizona spend a whopping 276 minutes daily – or 70 days per year – on their phone, and despite apps designed to curb blue light addiction, our habits aren’t changing in the near future especially considering how people are glued to their phones, streaming movies and shows, and video conferencing more than ever due to the coronavirus pandemic.

If those anecdotes haven’t made you pause for a second, perhaps knowing you spend more than three decades of your life staring at your electronic devices will.

A new study commissioned by Vision Direct found that the typical person spends about 34 years looking at phones, computers, or televisions, which means the average person spends over 13 hours daily glued to their screens. The study, which polled 2,000 British adults, said it also noticed a larger spike in usage during the COVID-19 pandemic, with video calls doubling during social distancing and quarantine.

“We’re lucky to have devices that connect us with the outside world,” said Benjamin Dumaine, of Vision Direct, in a press statement. “A similar pandemic taking place 30 or 40 years ago would have seen people coping with the lack of contact in very different ways.”

Here are some other interesting findings from the report, via Study Finds:

  • More than four hours a day is spent looking at a laptop.
  • Three-and-a-half hours spent toward TV time.
  • A quarter of couples fight over their partner’s screen time habits.
  • Four in 10 parents say their kids spend too much time on their devices.
