Though an active lifestyle is almost universally acknowledged as a positive thing, access to fitness resources varies greatly based on geography.

As bikini and speedo weather fast approaches, people across the United States are making New Year’s resolutions that have something to do with exercise. Some of them may want to lose 15 pounds. Others may be more intent on wellness. Whatever the reason, it’s likely that a lot of Americans are hitting the gym, yoga studio or hiking trail this month to reach their fitness goals.

But, although an active lifestyle is almost universally acknowledged as a positive thing, access to fitness resources varies greatly based on geography. In Lincoln, Nebraska, for example, there are a plethora of options for fitness and aerobics training.

Meanwhile, in Corpus Christi, Texas, there are only 29 fitness trainers or aerobics instructors per 100,000 residents.

So where are the best places to live if an active, healthy lifestyle is a priority for you? WalletHub has compared the U.S.’ 100 most populous cities and compiled a list of which locations fare well when it comes to physical activity in 2019 — and which don’t.

Unsurprisingly, major cities such as San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Chicago and New York place high, as do outdoor havens such as Honolulu.

Even more data

Beyond overall rankings, WalletHub broke down some of the factors that influence whether people work out.

Unsurprisingly, larger cities have some pretty hefty fitness club fees — but they also play host to a lot of basketball hoops, playgrounds, and other, more public places for exercise.
