One of the best things you can do for your career? Master your emotional intelligence. While the term “emotional intelligence” first appeared in a 1964 paper, Daniel Goleman’s 1995 book, Emotional Intelligence, catapulted the term into widespread use in the business world. - Label emotions with precise words
- Express emotions in regards to culture and context
- Regulate emotions in yourself and others
Recognizing your own feelings is one half of EQ. The other is your ability to regulate your emotions in a manner that best serves the people you interact with.
The skills needed to master these two aspects of EQ include developing an ability to read nonverbal cues (such as recognizing your coworker’s pantomimes), identifying cultural boundaries and norms, and developing a language to best express emotions in a non-offensive way. People with high EQ are as good at recognizing other people’s emotions as they are at understanding their own.
Research at Yale found that EQ has four major impacts on emotions: high EQ is equated with better decision-making, better job performance, an increased likelihood of optimal physical and mental health, and an ability to maintain quality friendships. All of these skills are needed in a successful work environment.
