Now, there's no doubt that things have gotten tougher, but even when the economy is rough, most hires are replacement hires.
I went to see my Yankees play Boston on Saturday. Despite leaving 14 runners on base, we managed to eke out a 3-0 win. (And though I say "we," funny thing about TheLadders.com is that despite being based here in Manhattan, probably about 1/3 of our office is "Red Sox Nation!")
You know, the new Yankees Stadium is really gorgeous and all, but, really, cheap seats are $75! And then they nicked me $10.65 for a Miller Lite!
A far cry from my first MLB game back in the '70s when I saw a Pirates double-header for, I think, $4. The world sure has changed.
And the world has changed in other ways, too. Take the high-end job hunt.
Time was, when industry was sleepier, you'd just put a few feelers out to your rivals, drop a hint to your college buddies, and maybe have a few drinks with the right people at the trade show. And voila, you'd be off to your next gig.
It was easy, if a bit slower-paced and less frequently done than today.
Now, today's high-end job hunt presents a lot more opportunity, but also a lot more room for confusion and competition.
As the New York Times wrote this weekend: Applicants Exceed Openings by a Record Ratio (though, to be fair, the records only extend back to 2000). The internet has made it so easy to reach out and ping recruiters, hiring managers, and potential bosses that everybody does it, and they end up spamming the very people they want to work for!
It has become a baffling, bemusing world where faceless bureaucrats, "faceless-ier" computers, and downright inhuman automatic emails are your sole sources of determining what's out there.
Hardly a good way for the top 10% of the nation's talent – those folks making $100,000 a year or more – to find their next role in life.
And that's why I started TheLadders.com – this Club for $100K+ professionals – six years ago. To make it easier, more transparent, and easier to understand how you can take your career management into your own hands.
We do everything from explaining where your resume goes once you hit send (hint: it's not on a silver platter directly to your future boss.)
To teaching you how to conquer the dreaded interview.
To assembling the best network of professional resume writers in the county.
To collecting and screening the largest collection of $100K+ jobs in the world.
And a whole lot more.
You are a part of our Club of the top 10% most experienced, most talented, most capable professionals in the nation. We think it ought to be a lot quicker, a lot more rational, and a lot less frustrating, for you to change into your next great role in life. And we'll keep on trying to bring you the tools, the advice, and the job leads to let you do just that.
OK, Readers, knock one out of the park this week! (Or at least into the cheap seats near the left field foul pole!)
Warmest regards,

Marc Cenedella
