Good Monday morning,
It's experiment time at TheLadders.com, Readers!
First, follow this link to Google images of "baby smile".
How does that make you feel? Did you end up smiling yourself, like I did? You kind of just can't help yourself, can you, seeing all those little cherubs gleaming away.
You see, we have a natural reaction to seeing human smiles that makes us feel elated, or happy, or positive when we see them.
And, Readers, I want you to use this truth to your advantage in your job hunt.
How?
Let's face it. Finding a new gig can be a frustrating, challenging experience. And with all the phone calls you have to make, the danger is that some of that frustration can sneak into your voice, leading you to not put your best foot forward.
So, here's my advice.
Buy a mirror.
Just a little mirror, and set it right by your phone. And, then, every time you have to make a phone call for an interview, an appointment, or a follow-up: look in that mirror.
And give yourself a big smile.
You see, when we look in a mirror and smile, our brain remembers the emotions it associates with smiles.
Positive, good-feeling emotions.
And because of the very tight natural connection between our facial expressions and emotions, your brain assumes "well, if I'm smiling, I must be feeling good!"
And, believe me, when you use this truth to your advantage, that positive feeling is going to go charging down the phone lines, making you sound like a hero.
And you just might be smiling all the way to... your new desk at your new job.
