Enlightened employers know that older workers bring wisdom, maturity, and experience to the table, but too often, it seems, that doesn't translate into a level playing field in the interview.

Top Ten Ways To Find Your Next Job

Readers, it's January and that means it's high season for finding your next great job. The year is off to a terrific start here at TheLadders.com, and we're experiencing our highest growth ever -- recruiters and hiring companies are posting more jobs with us than ever before.

I've put together a Top Ten list below to help your job search catch this wave of interest. If you only have time for one, I'd recommend creating or updating your bio -- you are three times more likely to find your job at TheLadders.com if you have a complete bio with at least your last two job experiences included. Follow this link to Edit your Bio.

To attract the high level of attention we're seeing from recruiters and hiring companies your way, here are our Top Ten Tips for getting noticed:

  1. Reach out to an old contact. Send them a link to a great article, let them know how your 2007 is going, or just say "Hi!" Get that network going!
  2. Join a professional organization, or reconnect with one you're already familiar with. Keeping up-to-date with your industry, and your fellow members, is a great way to make sure you are staying current.
  3. Be an archaeologist. Dig through your old files and pull out anything that signals your great past accomplishments. These can be commendations from your boss or colleagues, past performance reviews, or presentations and projects you're most proud of. This is the best material for a winning resume.
  4. Get your resume professionally written. It's my best advice for anybody embarking on a $100k+ job hunt. A professionally produced resume is the best way to catch the eye of a recruiter during that brief 10 seconds he or she is scanning it. That's what Jim Dodenhoff from California discovered:
  5. Hi Marc,

I am a Premium subscriber to the TheLadders.com and took advantage of your free offer of a resume critique from Peter Newfield and Career-resumes.com.

Jane Quick, Peter's associate, was constructive, to the point, and did not use the opportunity to try and pitch me on paid resume rework. She was refreshingly honest and helpful, leading me to ask her "what's the catch?" Of course, there was none, which makes me feel good about the subscription fee I pay to the TheLadders.com and about recommending Jane, Career-resumes.com, and TheLadders.com to other job seekers.

    Regards,
    Jim Dodenhoff

  6. Take an objective look at your current or most recent job. What did you like? What wasn't quite right? Understanding what worked for you in the past is the best way to plan your future.
  7. Do some industry research and make a list of companies you'd like to work for. Do you have any connections within those companies? Can you make or find some?
  8. Make a list of the things you'd like to find in a next job. Split it up into "must haves", "nice to haves", and "wish list". Keep it handy and only apply to jobs that meet your criteria. It may seem easy to just lob in an application for something that's close, but not quite, to what you need, but that means you'll be spreading yourself too thin when it comes to follow-up and interviews.
  9. Block off at least ½ hour, no email, no phone, to search through this week's listings. Evaluate each listing you like against the list you made in #7. With your Premium membership, you can apply today to jobs that interest you.
  10. Use our "MyJobs" functionality to make a job search plan. You can track the progress of your job hunt from application to interviews, and have a comprehensive picture of the status of your search right at your fingertips.
  11. Update or create your bio. As I said above, subscribers with a Bio are three times more likely to get a job through TheLadders.com. Our first-of-its-kind Recruiter Profile database allows you to be pro-active in reaching out to recruiters who hire people with your relevant background.

OK, Readers, those are my Top Ten Tips to making 2007 your Top year. And if you have another great tip -- one that "goes to eleven" -- please send it my way!
