This is what Jeff Bezos says you need to get hired at Amazon

If you’ve been flirting with the prospect of applying to Amazon, it might be worth reading what Jeff Bezos had to say about what he looks for in a candidate at the e-commerce giant in a decades-old letter to shareholders.

Credit to Fast Company for digging up Bezos’ Letter to Shareholders back in 1998; the Amazon CEO laid out a blueprint for candidates who hoped to one day work for Amazon, which has been one of the companies actually hiring during the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s not easy to work here,” Bezos said at the time. When he interviews candidates, Bezos said he tells them the following statement: “You can work long, hard, or smart, but at Amazon.com you can’t choose two out of three.”

He added: “We are working to build something important, something that matters to our customers, something that we can all tell our grandchildren about. Such things aren’t meant to be easy. We are incredibly fortunate to have this group of dedicated employees whose sacrifices and passion build Amazon.com.”

One of the traits that Bezos looks for is the ability to grow, not only as a company but within himself. In a chat earlier this year, Bezos said he’s keen to find people that could “tutor” him and help him learn a thing or two.

“I have always been figuring out how to hire people who could be my tutor, people who would teach me,” Bezos said via CNBC. “If you ever get lucky enough to be hiring people, make sure you’re hiring people that not only you can teach, but make sure you’re hiring people who are also going to teach you things.”

Customer Obsession

Leaders start with the customer and work backwards. They work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust. Although leaders pay attention to competitors, they obsess over customers.

Invent and Simplify

Leaders are right a lot. They have strong judgment and good instincts. They seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm their beliefs.

Hire and Develop the Best

Leaders raise the performance bar with every hire and promotion. They recognize exceptional talent, and willingly move them throughout the organization.
