My story is about the need to be flexible in your career path and being able to take advantage of opportunities when they come along, however unexpected or unplanned.
I had been working at a startup in Dublin, Ireland, but was there without my family. While the work was great, I missed my family and home and I chose to return to the US after 15 months. Soon after my return I connected with a former colleague and spent most of my time working to get a technology venture going. We were funding it ourselves, but I was halfheartedly looking for other employment at the same time. After seven months, the lead investor informed us they no longer wanted to pursue it. I was left at square one. Two months later, my colleague took a job in Dallas. It was then I really decided to intensify my search.
I joined TheLadders.com in June of ‘05. The postings on TheLadders.com were often a very good fit. Response rates were about 1 in 30, even with some follow up. Several of the responses led to phone interviews, and two of them to face to face.
I had contacted my present company through a posting on TheLadders.com, but they didn't respond right away. I assumed they weren't interested, but another month of looking, and a few interviews later, I was offered a great opportunity. Not only does it take advantage of my skills and experience, but it has a good future. I'm very excited!
Your recent addition of the tracking function was useful. I was a paid member for about 8 months. I don't know if my experience is typical, but I'm glad that you were there, and appreciate the service you offer.
